Age Requirements

To receive discount fares based on age, please check that the qualifications below are met. If there are only adult fares available for your itinerary, we will quote adult fares.

Senior: To qualify for available senior fares, passengers must be age 60 or over.

Youth: To qualify for available youth fares, passengers must be 25 and under.

Child: : Age requirements to qualify for child fares vary by product and country. Please check the details for the specific product you select. Please note that ages 4 through 11 generally qualify for the child fares except for:

  • Austria: Ages 6-15
  • Belgium: Ages 6-11
  • Bulgaria: Ages 6-11
  • Denmark: Ages 6-15
  • Czech Republic: Ages 6-11
  • Finland: Ages 6-16
  • Germany: Ages 4-14

Passengers holding a valid International Student Identity Card can immediately save 15% off rail fares to most of our destinations.

How to Get an International Student Identity Card

Visit the International Student Identity Card web site to purchase a card and to learn more about the program. More than 5 million students around the world will purchase an ISIC card this year.

To qualify for your International Student ID card, you must be age 12 or older and currently enrolled as a degree seeking student at an accredited institution. Continuing education, language school, and non-degree seeking students are not eligible.

Discount Limitations

Sorry, the ISIC discount may not be applied:

  • To weekday Acela Express service
  • To connecting services provided by most other (non-Amtrak) carriers, including the Canadian portions of joint Amtrak/VIA Rail Canada service
  • To upgrade accommodation charges (although the cardholder may upgrade his or her accommodations at the standard rate)
  • In conjunction with any other multi-ride fares, or other discounts and promotions, except as may be specifically provided
  • Please note that if you make any change to your itinerary, you must re-qualify for any membership discount used. This means that, to be eligible to receive an applicable membership discount, any change to your itinerary must be made at least three days in advance of travel.

    Terms and Conditions

    ISIC cardholders receive a 15% discount on the best available Amtrak rail fare. For Auto Train service, cardholders receive a 15% discount off rail fare only but not the vehicle charge.

    To receive these discounts, the cardholder must present both an International Student ID card and a valid photo ID.

    To be able to apply the ISIC discount, you must book your tickets (including tickets for travel on unreserved trains) at least three days in advance of travel.

    Cardholder benefits may not be transferred.

    No discounts are available on the following services: weekday Acela Express or connecting services provided by most other (non-Amtrak) carriers, including the Canadian portion of joint Amtrak/VIA Rail Canada service.

    Sleeping Car, Business Class and First Class upgrades are permitted with the payment of the full applicable accommodation charge.

    Tickets purchased with the ISIC discount are subject to all rules and restrictions of the type of fare purchased. The ISIC discount is not valid in conjunction with any multi-ride fares, other discounts or promotions, except as specifically stipulated.
